So I love ice cream. For anyone who knows me this is not new information. But what you might not know is that this runs in my family. When I was younger my mom decided how much allowance I should get based on how many scoops of ice cream I could buy per week. (We came to the conclusion that any healthy person should definitely be eating at least two scoops per week).
Anyway I’m back from my grand adventure (aka tasting my way through the gelato of Europe) and to be completely honest I feel a bit like I’ve come off this epic waterslide and SPLASH I’m back in the pool. Now don’t get me wrong; pools are great, but compared to the aforementioned waterslide it is a bit of comedown. To top if all off my pool metaphor ends here because typically your friends are in the pool and I’ve got two weeks of missing them a whole lot before we all splash back into the same dorm. However this is also good news because not being back in my dorm quite yet means I have nothing really pressing that I need to be doing. I’m sure before I know it I’ll get to see them again (YAY!) although I’ll also be facing an avalanche of responsibilities not to mention hours upon hours of homework (BOOOO HISSSSS).
So clearly, adjustment is not my strong suit and I have done my fair share of listlessly lying on the couch jet-lagged and not really planning on doing anything about it while I read novel after novel and sigh about the gelato of days past. (I’m truly am such a drama queen). Drama aside I have actually done most of the activities Rapunzel sings about doing in her tower during the first ten minutes of Tangled (just saying) so cabin fever is officially upon me and off I venture out of the house. Which, when I finally do, finds me trying out this amazing barre exercise class which is where I had the realization that Feminism is in fact an ice cream shop.
One thing I learned from my adventure abroad was that my future is not completely planned out for me in the way that I was starting to feel like it was. Off went the shy and sheltered person that I thought I was and before I knew it I was having the time of my life working and going to school abroad doing amazing things on my own and meeting fabulous people.
Coming home I felt like a completely different person which is when I decided that as I go about planning my next mini and grand adventures I’m determined to always feel this strength and independence that I’ve discovered. This perfectly illustrates why: Feminism is an ice cream shop. Not convinced? Basically, feminism throws you into this idealistic and air conditioned sanctuary of choices that are completely up to you regardless of gender, race or anything else. It throws hard choices at you like: pistachio or hazelnut? coffee or mint chocolate chip? fudge or whipped cream? nuts or sprinkles? cup or cone? Will anyone judge me if I get two scoops? CAN I JUST CHOOSE EVERYTHING?!?!. Which is the exact same panic I personally felt turning in my major declaration paperwork sophomore year of college (WHY CAN’T I JUST MAJOR IN EVERYTHING!?!). The good news though, is I did have that choice. Feminism aka the ice cream shop gives you the choice to choose where you’re headed in life and the good news is whatever you path you take, you’re still eating something you love.
Bye for now,
Sophia
